A New Shift in EU-China Automotive Trade: Rising Influence of Chinese Vehicle Exports

A notable shift is emerging in EU-China automotive trade relations. According to research data cited by the German automotive industry media outlet AUTOHAUS and based on an EY study, the value of automotive vehicles and components imported by the EU from China exceeded, for the first time in 2025, the EU’s corresponding exports to China. EU exports to China fell to EUR 16 billion, representing a 34% year-on-year decline, while EU imports of related products from China rose to EUR 22 billion. This development indicates that the long-standing trade structure, historically dominated by Europe, is undergoing a significant adjustment.

From an industry perspective, this trend is not only reflected in the reversal of trade figures, but also in the steadily increasing competitiveness of China’s automotive sector on the global stage. In recent years, China has strengthened its capabilities in new energy vehicles, battery technology, component supply chains, intelligent vehicle systems, and manufacturing efficiency. These developments are enabling Chinese automotive products to enter the European market on a larger scale.

The German market is also feeling the impact of this trend. Reports indicate that Germany’s automotive exports to China have declined from approximately EUR 30 billion in 2022 to EUR 13.6 billion, while Germany’s imports of automotive-related products from China have risen to EUR 7.4 billion. This suggests that the influence of China’s automotive industry on the European market is expanding beyond product presence to broader trade structures and competitive dynamics.

It is also worth noting that this trend is not limited to higher export volumes. It also reflects the continued progress of Chinese automotive companies in localizing their operations in Europe. Recent reports have highlighted that BYD has opened its new German headquarters in Offenbach, with around 100 employees initially moving in, and with further expansion plans including showroom and event space development. Such steps demonstrate that Chinese brands are moving beyond pure export activity toward local operations, channel development, and long-term market establishment.

Overall, the fact that China’s automotive exports to Europe have surpassed the EU’s automotive exports to China marks a symbolic and strategic milestone for the industry. It suggests that the competitive landscape of the European automotive market is evolving, while the participation and influence of Chinese brands in Europe continue to grow.

As a company closely following developments in the German and wider European automotive market, we will continue to monitor the expansion of Chinese brands in Europe as well as the new opportunities and challenges arising from changing EU-China automotive trade dynamics.
