Important Safety Reminder for Snowy Days: Fines for Not Clearing Snow from Your Vehicle

With increased snowfall across Germany, vehicles are often covered by snow and ice. German road traffic regulations require drivers to remove all snow and ice from their vehicle—including windows, roof, lights, and license plate—before starting their trip. Failure to do so may result in fines and additional liability in the event of an accident.

Below is an overview of the most common winter-related fines:

Common Violations and Penalties in Winter

1.Snow-covered license plate
Fine: €5

2.Only clearing a small viewing hole on the windshield (“Guckloch”)
Fine: €10
German law requires a fully unobstructed field of vision while driving.

3.Not removing snow from the car roof
Fine: €25
Drivers are liable if falling snow causes damage or an accident.

4.Idling the engine to warm up the car
Fine: €80
This is prohibited in Germany due to noise and environmental concerns.

5.Driving without winter tires in winter road conditions
Fine: From €60 + 1 point in Flensburg
Higher penalties apply if traffic is obstructed or an accident occurs.

Winter Driving Safety Tips

  • Allow 5–10 minutes before departure to remove snow
  • Clear all windows, lights, mirrors, and the roof thoroughly
  • Winter tires (M+S or snowflake symbol) are mandatory in snowy or icy conditions
  • Use antifreeze windshield washer fluid

Police carry out stricter checks during winter. Drivers are advised to prepare accordingly and ensure safe travel at all times.
